Biographical history
Poeta, crítico literário, ensaísta, biógrafo, tradutor e conferencista. Foi professor do ensino secundário e lecionou literatura portuguesa nas Universidades de Rennes, Nantes e Vincennes (Paris-VIII).
Fundou em 1961 a revista Sibila, dirigiu a coleção Poesia e Ensaio da Ulisseia entre 1964-1966 e fez crítica no Jornal de Letras e Artes. Viveu em França de 1967 a 1988, foi Conselheiro Cultural da Embaixada de Portugal em Paris, de 1975 a 1988, dirigiu a Fundação Oriente em Lisboa de 1988 a 2000 e foi Presidente da Associação Portuguesa dos Críticos Literários entre 2000 e 2017.
