Biographical history
Natural de São Vicente, Cabo Verde, foi advogado e político português. Cedo se envolveu em atividades cívicas e políticas, nomeadamente de oposição ao Estado Novo, foi várias vezes detido pela polícia política. Em meados dos anos 1940 foi um dos fundadores do movimento de unidade democrática (MUD) e do partido socialista em 1973, deputado e vice-presidente da Assembleia Constituinte. Foi o primeiro presidente da Assembleia da República (Julho 1976/Outubro 1978).
