Fundada no Porto, iniciativa de um grupo de professores e dirigida por Vasco Teixeira, pedagogo e professor universitário, vocacionada para a área dos livros escolares e dicionários de qualidade. Em 1987 sucedem-lhe os filhos, expandindo o negócio para a área de multimédia nos anos 1990. Em 2002 a empresa adquire a Areal Editores e a Raiz Editora, em 2009 a Sextante e no ano seguinte o Grupo Bertrand.
